Printing is becoming less of a requirement in business and in homes.
Recently, I booked tickets to an event through ticketek, on the computer, and was wondering if the printer had enough ink because how bad would it be if I went to print the tickets at the last moment, to discover the printer was refusing to cough up (I know, I should always have spares, but hey..).
Anyhow imagine my surprise when I found that the booking along with barcode is downloaded straight to my mobile phone, and then when I get to the advent, at the turn-style (they still exist), I put my mobile lcd up against the sensor, and, hey presto, I'm in!
This is just another example of where the cloud is taking over the necessity of having to use expensive print ink or toner.
For the time being, the lack of need of printing for storage records due to the cloud has been offset by the increase in the number of people been able to avail themselves of computers/printers as a result of lower prices, and increased user ability. But eventually that will reach saturation point, if not already so.
The following Google trend graph indicates the fall in interest in printers via google searches since 2004.
The numbers on the graph reflect how many searches have been done for a particular term, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time
